3 Examples of Why We Need News Media Reform.

#1: The Hutchinson Post is all about news not local to the Reno County area, let alone Kansas.  Resident complaints flood the comments on their posts on Gossip Hutch’s Facebook group.

#2. The recent KWCH post about finding 7 human remains or coffins the Governor’s residence. No article, digging (no pun intended) showed, again not Kansas. For those of you not in Kansas; KWCH is a main news outlet from Wichita, KS. But still no article even poorer reporting.

#3 The ordeal in Tennessee. I refuse to give this female gendered person any credit or glory like the current news system. However, she violently murdered a fellow teenager many years ago. Who is the victim? What was her name? Without looking it up, I don’t know. But the killer was to be executed and it failed. Her face, name and info about the botched execution and her current medical status are all over media like she’s a victim.

It is clear the days of unbiased reporting are gone. It’s clear reporting with integrity and intelligence are gone.

Yet, I caught polite flack about suggesting and offering to leverage my writing business to start a new News Outlet for Reno County and the surrounding rural areas.

***Gone are the days of Paul Harvey and “the rest of the story”. ***

BRAIN HEALTH

When we think of brain health, we often tend to think mental health; such as PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, BiPolar, and the list goes on. We commonly overlook serious physical issues of Brain Health; such as TBI, Dementia, Multiple Sclerosis, etc.

Coupled together, these issues can bring to light a huge Pandora’s Box. We never know how we may react or handle stressful situations.

Everyone is on a different level in their mind, and we have no way to know what is brewing inside. One wrong attitude or situation can totally tear someone down in a split second.

Another aspect to consider is that there are a lot of people with out proper diagnosis for either mental or physical brain issues.

We see the mental health professionals for medications and therapy/counseling. Whereas we see Neurology for the physical health and treatment of brain.

It is important to one, understand that we need to be accountable for ourselves and be proactive in our Brain Health, just like our Heart, Respiratory, Vision, etc.

But also, I draw to your attention that being coherent of other people and knowing that they have issues you may not know about, and they may not even know about. Sometimes; especially if you know they have issues, it is best to just leave them alone and do not start any form of contact with them. Sometimes tragic things happen in an avoidable situation that we unintentionally put ourselves in.

Good habits to keep up on your Brain Health include the following; eat right and healthy, exercise, meditate, do mentally challenging activities (an example would be a word search or related puzzles) and having a good sleep pattern.

When we do not get enough sleep, exercise or eat right; it can negatively affect the brain and through everything out of order.

Also, it is a good rule of thumb to talk to your primary care on a routine check up to make sure everything is working the way it should with the Brain. A lot of people go years without knowing that they have an issue of any sort.

There are a lot of great resources available for mental health and your primary care can have you take a Cognitive Test. If you score low enough on the Cognitive Test, there are therapies for this as well; just like Physical Therapy for an injured knee, back, etc. If the therapist considers it necessary, then they can refer you to a Neurologist for further testing to decide what the physical issue is or if there is one. The Cognitive Test is not hard, so do not panic; it is not like a test trying to decipher Egyptian Hieroglyphics!

There is so much that is still being discovered about mental health and an ugly stigma around it, that we need to break. The same goes for physical Brain Health.

If you or someone you know are in Crisis, you can always reach out to the Crisis Line by dialing 988. If you are a Veteran, select option 1, if you are not a Veteran; select option 2.

Thank you for reading this blog and be on the look out for more to come!

Life With Dogs

Life with dogs can be interesting, fun, trying and chaotic! To quote Forest Gump, “life is like a box of chocolates”; this could also be said for each day living with dogs. Dogs keep things interesting in a good way, yet they also protect us from danger and know when we aren’t doing well; physically and mentally. Dogs are loyal to their packs, which includes their humans.

The love of a dog is special and sweet. If you’re lucky enough to their love and devotion; you have a great treasure! Don’t ever take it for granted, as dogs are only around for so long; until they cross the rainbow bridge and become our guardian angels.

The Importance of Mental Health

Like any illness, mental health requires proper checkups, treatment (if necessary), and follow up care. There is a huge stigma around mental health. Like any illness, mental health requires proper checkups, treatment (if necessary), and follow up care. There is a huge stigma around mental health. This stigma causes people to shy away from admitting they have issues/concerns, getting help and in extreme circumstances, they commit suicide due to not properly addressing their mental health.

Kansas is ranked 8th in the U.S. for suicide, with 75% of the state not having adequate services/ providers to serve the communities. The suicide rate for Kansas, per 100,000 people is 19.53% (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention May 2025 State Fact Sheets | AFSP).

This is alarming, as one suicide death is one too many and I feel this could be easily reversed if we were to work as a whole society to better understand mental health and support those with mental health concerns and especially to recognize suicidal signs and support those in crisis.

There are a lot of trainings available to help with these tasks. In addition, we need, as a society; work together to get more resources, providers and advocacy to those communities in need.

In conclusion, mental health is again, like any health issue and needs pre-care, treatment when necessary and follow up care.

“Together we can break the stigma around mental health”.

What Does it Take to be a Writer?

Writing is not just work or a requirement for education (grade school, high school, or college). Writing is an art and a gift. Writing is not just work or a requirement for education (grade school, high school, or college). Writing is an art and a gift. However, with any art and gift; writing also has it’s required disciplines and dedication. For some people, they can sit down and just start typing and knock out an article, blog, book or a work requirement just as easy as getting out of bed. For others, it takes time to think of a prompt and brainstorm what to write about. Then there are people that use writing as a way to express themselves and as a form of medicine.

Whatever your reason for writing, there are universal tasks that writers must complete. First, you must think about the prompt (or invent your own). Then you think of what to write about in regard to the prompt. After this is done, you must go back and read your work and edit it. Editing can be daunting and intimidating but it is necessary for accuracy. You are looking for grammar issues, spelling mistakes and proper punctuation. In addition to these common errors, you also look for missed words, incomplete thoughts and sentence structure. We are all human and it’s our nature to need to make corrections within our work. It can be amazing what you find when you proofread/edit your own work. It is advisable to have “a second set of eyes” review your work.

Writing can be fun, challenging, (in some instances) stressful, but overall rewarding. Once you’ve completed your work, there is a sense of pride and confidence that you wrote something worth publishing and reading; no matter how many people read it or leave feedback.

As a writer, I feel it is my only gift, talent and art that I do well in. I love to write as it slows my brain down and lets me express myself in ways that talking or other activities can’t. If you are new to writing or have been doing it for a long time; no matter what, how and why you write, find a reason to enjoy it!

Making a First Aid Kit is Smart; but Don’t be Too Smart!

If you’re a Veteran or Military Surplus fan, then you know how durable the metal Ammo Cans are. The Ammo Can is a great idea for a First Aid Kit. The small cans are perfect for use in a minor incident and can be easily stored in the house, vehicle, or wherever you choose. If you go with a larger Ammo Can, obviously, you can store more items and even with its bulky size; it would be good for outdoor adventures, such as camping because of the survival supplies you can store in it.

Now, if you read the title of this post and are wondering why in the world would I say don’t be too smart? First off, these Ammo Cans are so durable it almost takes Hercules to open them! I was really proud of my idea to make the first and only Ammo Can First Aid Kit; boy I tell you I thought it was my best idea yet!! Well unfortunately, I had an incident where I need to access my Ammo Can First Aid Kit, that was located in my bedroom. I had accidently stabbed myself in the finger and blood wasn’t slowing down, even after washing it and applying pressure. Now, in a fumble of trying not to get blood everywhere, I had to get into the Ammo Can because I needed to retrieve first aid supplies. As previously indicated, it should be an Olympic Sport to open the ammo can! I struggled to hold it and open it while trying to hold pressure on my wound and not get blood everywhere!

In conclusion, I hope you found this useful and in away comical! Wal*Mart has waterproof cases cheap and of different sizes in the camping area and they work just as good! Another thing don’t be like me and outsmart yourself!!
